Out of the Box Challenge // Two for Joy AKA "Shut the fuck up!"
/Out of the Box is a choose-your-own-adventure styled shoot challenge hosted by Catalyst and curated by Color Pop Events. Each team of vendors received a special mystery box filled with fun, beautiful, eclectic shoot supplies to be incorporated into a styled wedding shoot.
From the get-go, we were in love with our models: a real life couple, Sarah + Carolina. Our Out of the Box team connected with them via Instagram, and we were sold when they told us the only detail their wedding had to have was their dog as the flower girl.
We met in person for drinks and were unanimously feeling we had picked the perfect couple. Our first evening together was spent listening to stories of their meeting: an almost-missed connection, driving hours to meet halfway for a first date, facing a fear of heights, falling in love, moving to the same city, revisiting the first date and Carolina’s fear of heights during the proposal (“I still don’t know what the view looks like.”). We felt that Sarah's entire body seemed to smile while talking about Carolina, and Carolina's deep, soulful smile and tenderness toward her future bride were qualities we couldn't wait to convey.
Our team dreamt up a collaborative vision and went to work. A week later, when we opened the box, we wanted to cry...because the contents were so very opposite of the direction we were headed and were already hard at work bringing to life. But the mourning was momentary, followed by a whirlwind of energy and adrenaline. Our shoot was only a few days away, and we wanted to do our best to honor the box and its contents.
Taking a closer look at what we had to work with, we could see glimpses of the bright colors and patterns from our childhoods in the late 80s and early 90s. The theme of the box seemed to say, “Don’t take yourselves too seriously—have fun, be playful.” And so we chose to design a playful, colorful day filled with child-like sweetness and details which emphasized the joy of marriage. With colorful florals, a geometric invitation that unfolded like a game, whimsical desserts (gluten-free meringues and a bright watercolor cake), and a handwoven altar piece aptly named the mermaid tail, we took the idea that "Yes is More!" in weddings to another level!
Our original group name was "Two for Joy," but we’ve lovingly been referring to our time together as ‘Shut the fuck up!’ because those were the words that came out of Sarah’s mouth when Carolina proposed to her, caught in a state of out-of-the-box disbelief.
