Latoya Dixon Photography Knows How to Treat Her Clients Like Family
/We have loved Latoya Dixon for a long, long time. She has been a huge supporter of Catalyst, our keynote speaker at the last {un}convention, and is the leader of The Queen Photographers, who sponsor our Photo of the Week series. But Latoya is more than just a major part of our community, she is also a vendor who knows how to connect with her clients on a very personal level, resulting in some truly amazing photos. That's why we are so thrilled to have her join our vendor directory!
What is the mission of Latoya Dixon Photography?
Latoya Dixon Photography exists to provide a personable and enjoyable wedding photography experience that leaves couples feeling like they've hired a close friend--one who loves them, supports their union, and knows how to capture those stories just as beautifully.
What is the origin story of Latoya Dixon Photography?
When my husband and I got married, we opted to have a small, intimate wedding. This allowed us to really focus on each other and our vows, preparing to enter the union of marriage. While we chose not to have all the bells and whistles of a traditional wedding and only invited our immediate family, we made sure to have a photographer. I want my clients to have that experience. Whatever way you decide to celebrate your marriage, however it reflects your values and the way you see a good time, let it be. It will have so much more meaning for the two of you in the end.
What is your favorite project that you've worked on?
During my first year in business I was hired to photograph a natural skin care line created by a black woman also based in South Carolina. The project was the first of its kind for me so I was really eager. The shoot took place on a humid, 100+ degree afternoon, almost unbearably hot. But the owner, the make up artists, the owner, and the creative director were all troopers. Black girl magic is real; we made a scorching day in South Carolina look like a tropical paradise in the photos. Those images are some of my favorites to this day.
How are you a "wedding space disruptor"?
When I look at the wedding industry I feel like it's easy for couples to get thrown into a generic pile of "engaged couples". This leaves those who don't quite fit any particular style inspiration or publication out when they look for inspiration from others who have decided to plan their wedding straight from the inspiration they drew up. I want to provide an option for couples who don't want to be ushered down the path of tradition. I want to make these folks the priority in my business. Who you love, what you look like, or how you celebrate should never be more important than how you feel doing so.
What three ingredients are necessary for a great day at Latoya Dixon Photography?
Warm light, intimate connection, and great conversation
What are some traits of your ideal clients?
I've found that my ideal clients embrace silence. I think this has to do with them actively practicing mindfulness and the appreciation for the present moment. They also seek a good time no matter what else is going on around them.
LATOYA DIXON PHOTOGRAPHY
Hi, I'm Latoya and I am a native of South Carolina. SC is home, but to me 'home' is not only where the heart is, but where the stories are told. Nothing feels more like home than a captivating story told over a good drink and a savory meal. I aim to tell those same familial stories for couples through my lens.
