Real Couple // A Sweet, Fun Wedding in Pittsfield, MA: Jenn + Mark
/"We were set up on a blind date! A mutual friend told us about each other back in February 2011, but she didn't actually set us up until September. So we'd see each other around town during the months in between, and know that eventually we were going to be set up on a date, but we never actually said hi to each other until after she introduced us.
My husband has a very busy work schedule that often takes him out of town or forces him to stay at work late, and I volunteer for various community organizations outside of my 9-to-5, so we knew we wanted a wedding that was simple to plan and that it didn't take us away from what we do on a daily basis. We knew we wanted to have it in the Berkshires since most of my family and friends back in Virginia had not been there yet, and we wanted to give them a chance to experience the community and see why I decided to live in this area. We decided to go with the simplest (and most affordable) wedding venue option so that we can spend the money to customize a few details to our liking.
I hate being the center of attention, so if I had my way, I would just magically appear at the front of the aisle, say "I Do", and then immediately poof away. Unfortunately, technology isn't there yet. So we settled on a very short ceremony so that there was minimal looking at me. But it was a very special moment because we had our dear friend, Ethan, perform the wedding ceremony. He quoted Bob Dylan, as requested, and really made the ceremony specific to us.
This wedding was really about celebrating with our family and loved ones. I let my mother decide on the flower arrangements (which were beautiful) while I decided to get myself and the bridesmaids EcoFlower bouquets. They are made of wood and can last forever! I wanted a small cake for us to cut and eat, but we also got a Rice Krispy treat tower, apple cider donut holes, and mini-cupcakes for the guests. Our cake toppers also speak to our personalities -- everyone knows we love eating lobster, and one of our toppers says "You're My Lobster," while the other one is a little snarkier with "Shit Just Got Real." And then of course, the music. We hired a great DJ that pulled off our eclectic mix of music (Grateful Dead with Childish Gambino) with pop hits and party favorites.
