It was really important to me to bring on a real LGBTQ+ couple, and not just two models. I also loved being able to represent plus size women and work with Love and Lace Bridal to find something they would look amazing in. The more I work with publications and the wedding world in general, these are two areas in which I see a lack of content. Creating this shoot with diversity in mind was my number one goal.
As a volunteer with Annapolis Pride, I actually found our models through their instagram page. Networking is truly my favorite part of a shoot, especially one as big as this one!
When I coordinate styled shoots, I like to play around with colors and themes that I haven’t yet worked with. Knowing this was going to be a winter shoot, I was excited to get out of my comfort zone with something moodier. Once our color palette was settled — rich purples, blues, greens, and a hint of gold — I pretty much knew the vendors I wanted to bring in and lift up with this shoot.
Why did you choose the vendors you did when putting together this shoot?
I met Allie Dearie, our photographer, during The Pride Project, another LGTBQ-focused shoot I put together in May. She was so much fun to work with, and after following her work all fall, I knew she’d be an amazing addition to the team. Nikki Varney, of Island Flowers, and I re-connected after ten years as she transitioned into owning her family flower shop. I was so excited to see what she came up with, and she delivered beyond my wildest dreams. Cindy Wells, who owns Love & Lace Bridal Boutique is always my go-to contact and first referral for bridal gowns. Their shop and staff are just amazing. Stephanie Squires, who owns All In The Mix Bake Shop, is always coming up with something fun and new to showcase, and this is my favorite cake she’s ever done. I could go on and on about every single vendor. It truly was a dream team."
Tell us about all the details!
I was ecstatic to shoot at The Winslow. It was the perfect backdrop for something moody — exposed brick meets industrial metal. They had so many unique spaces to play around in. Nikki, our florist, really wanted to do something bold and different, and I was all for it! We were frustrated in seeing bouquets that were identical for weddings with two brides — bouquets should speak to each person’s individual personality! She came up with this amazing idea to do one presentation bouquet and one cascade bouquet, so they would almost melt together in the photos, but still be unique on their own. Not to mention the floral crescent moon arch, table displays, and delicate hair combs she crafted for the bridesmaids.
Whitney, who helped us with bridesmaids’ dresses, had such a great eye for two different gowns that would complement each other. We ended up having Skyler and Sadie in velvety dark green gowns, which made the details really pop! Nikki Hufnagel, who designed our jewelry, selected some incredible pieces for all our models that fit so well with our theme. As soon as I saw her work, I knew we had to have her involved.
I also loved the idea of doing black plates with gold chargers, and Missy at Pretty Little Wedding Co. had exactly what I was looking for. She is always so easy and lovely to work with. Once these artisan charcuterie boards started popping up, I knew I had to have one for this shoot. Kat, from Annapolis Cheese Girl, did an amazing job! When I talked with Marcelle from Wine Key Experience, she immediately had ideas on what our signature drinks should be. I was really amazed by the details their bartender showed off — rose-shaped ice, blackberry syrup, and the perfect garnishes. My favorite table detail was the agate slices as name cards that Yvonne from Coffee & Calligraphy made for us, again bringing in real stones for our jewel tones.
For hair and makeup, I imagined long loose waves, and deferred to Stacie from Stacie Snyder Beauty to make it happen. Kelsey, from Zero Beauty was super excited to play around with a more dramatic look, and I fully trusted her vision to go with mine.
