Real Couples // Couples' Boudoir: Monique + Rochelle

Real Couples // Couples' Boudoir: Monique + Rochelle

I've shot many couples' boudoir sessions before, but when Monique and Rochelle first expressed interest in being photographed, I realized this was our chance to do something different, something a little more wild than I had ever done before. I did everything I could to establish a safe environment for the session, but mostly let this amazing couple do their own thing. I did receive one of the best compliments of my life after the session: "Kinzie! You're so easy to get naked in front of!" But really, the magic was all them; I was just there to document the journey.

Real Couples // A Seattle Surprise Engagement: Taymah + Brittany

Real Couples // A Seattle Surprise Engagement: Taymah + Brittany

Taymah and Brittany traveled to Seattle from Chicago for a summer getaway and wanted some portraits done together in front of the Seattle skyline. I took them to one of the best spots to get romantic views of Seattle, Gas Works Park. Little did Brittany know, though, that Taymah had something else extra special in mind. She snuck a diamond ring in their bag and gave me the signal when she was ready to drop to one knee and propose to Brittany right there in front of the perfect Seattle backdrop. I had Brittany facing the other way, and when she turned back around to see Taymah holding out a ring she could not believe her eyes. Their smiles for the rest of the evening say it all. Their love and joy with one another easily spreads to everyone around them, and the glow in their photos does not just come from the sun.

Real Couples // Rainy Catskills Wedding: Aubrey + Jake

Real Couples // Rainy Catskills Wedding: Aubrey + Jake

Aubrey is an actress, and Jake is a trendsetter in the Brooklyn restaurant scene. I photographed Aubrey and Jake’s wedding this past October 3rd. It was a rainy and cold day but the camaraderie, love, and joy made the weather not matter. The wedding was held at the Inn at West Settlement, located in the gorgeous Catskills and the fall foliage was in full bloom. The amazing skirt on Aubrey’s dress was handmade by her mom! Aubrey’s jewelry for the event was a ring from her grandmother, and the box that held the ring happened to also have Aubrey’s birth year on it. The ceremony was officiated by their close friend.

Behind the Scenes with Lovelit Films // Sabrina & Moira

Sabrina and Moira are a real-life queer Chilean-American couple living in Los Angeles, CA. They met through mutual friends in Portland, OR in 2005. Moira attempted to get Sabrina’s attention several times, but it wasn’t until 5 years later, when the 2010 earthquake hit central Chile that they made a real connection, bonding over their concern for family in the region during the natural disaster. In Moira’s words, “It took an 8.8 earthquake in Chile to get her to notice me!” They fell in love and have been together ever since. This past New Year's Eve, they spontaneously eloped in Hawaii.

Real Couples // A Vibrant and Dapper New York Engagement: Ben + Paul

Ben and Paul wanted to keep their engagement session casual yet classy and chose to contrast their dapper looks with the more industrial feel of the borough of Queens — in particular the Queensboro Bridge in Long Island City and Hells Gate Bridge in Astoria Park. Additionally, they finagled their way into a badass view of Manhattan by utilizing their wedding hotel's rooftop deck (Ravel Hotel) for their engagement session, avoiding the need to shell out any extra funds for an exclusive location. They made sure their tailoring was bold and vibrant to celebrate their ability to marry. They got engaged shortly after the repeal of DOMA, and their backgrounds are in theater.

Real Couples // "In Sickness and in Health": Brandi + Robbie

The day began as any other "day before" a wedding day. We spent the morning running around, trying to finish up all last minute details. That afternoon, I was headed to our suite to prepare things for the girls the next day, and Robbie went out with the guys to the trampoline park. This was to be the last time we'd see each other before the wedding day. I joked, "don't break an arm!" A few hours later, I get a call from Robbie that something had gone wrong. I rushed to the ER to find the doctor telling him that he had torn both of his patellar tendons in a freak accident and that he had to have emergency surgery. We were both scared, but knew the show must go on. As Robbie was recovering from his surgery, I went to our rehearsal and spread the news. Minus rescheduling the honeymoon, things continued as planned, with the addition of the groom's wheelchair.

Wedding Inspiration // Joshua Tree Modern Geometric Lesbian Elopement

The idea for this shoot was to capture the natural beauty of the desert in Joshua Tree alongside the natural beauty of these two gorgeous brides for elopement inspiration. To accentuate the minimal, modern appeal of eloping, we chose dramatic, modern copper geometric accents for the decor contrasted with loose organic florals and plants, and minimally adorned but beautifully draped gowns in black and white. Our models are a real-life couple, Bridget and Kristi, who were planning their own elopement at the time of our shoot!

Wedding Elopement Planned and Executed in 6 Hours: Gabby + Callie

Wedding Elopement Planned and Executed in 6 Hours: Gabby + Callie

Gabby and I were engaged and planning a wedding for November 2016. We had joked about eloping, both of us not wanting a big spectacle, and one morning it became more than a joke. Around 11:00am on a Wednesday morning, it just clicked for both of us. We knew we wanted to get married that day so we jumped off the couch and started scrambling. Seven hours later, with our beautiful daughter and two amazing friends, we were getting married in a little chapel in LA. We had a tiny little cake, a few flowers, a photographer and the clothes we picked out in ten minutes at a Banana Republic on the way. After the short ceremony we went to a restaurant nearby for champagne and dinner.

Real Couples // A Matching Pair: Joe + Joey

Joe and Joey met in a nontraditional way through an online app. They had talked to each other for a month before meeting up and totally clicked when they learned that they share a mutual love for all things pharmacy. It was on a whim that they decided to meet for their first date, and in full first date fashion, trying to impress his date, Joey decided to not wear his glasses. Unfortunately, that completely backfired because the menu was on the wall. He thought he had just made a fool of himself but Joe simply laughed it off and said, "How cute are you?" In that moment, Joey realized he could be completely himself around Joe, and they have been inseparable ever since and will officially be tying the knot on October 1st, 2016 in Richmond, VA.

Real Couples // A Hawaiian Elopement: Michael + Jon Mark

Real Couples // A Hawaiian Elopement: Michael + Jon Mark

n addition to scripting a completely creative and unique wedding experience for themselves, Mike and Jon Mark are a perfect example of an amazing couple who beat the odds: thirteen years ago, they serendipitously met at a Minneapolis gay bar when Jon Mark was visiting from the East Coast and Michael was out with friends: their eyes met across the crowded bar, they struck up a conversation, and they've been together ever since. They both live professional lives in New York City, love to travel extensively (their first date was a trip to Norway!), and have family and friends throughout the country. Because of the logistics of marriage laws, family dynamics, etc., they opted to tie the knot in the most private and pleasurable way possible. They flew to Maui, one of their favorite places on earth, for some sightseeing and relaxation. About a week into their stay, they went to the courthouse Wailuku where Justice Rhonda Loo (reportedly the first female judge in Hawaii!) performed a sweet, tear-filled ceremony for the couple and a witness. After the ceremony, the couple went to a nearby bistro to start the flurry of texts and phone calls to loved ones back home- surprise, everyone, we’re married! After a celebratory meal, Michael and Jon Mark went to a gorgeous beach on Maui's north shore for some quiet time and relaxed portraits by the water as the sun began to set on their wedding day. Their deep connection and gratitude for each other is so plain to see in the resulting photos.

Real Couples // A Dog Lover's Engagement: Kristen + Laura

Two women from seemingly opposite worlds, a lawyer and an artist fell in love. From first meeting, it was obvious to me how much Kristen and Laura cared for each other. It's the gentle, soft kind of love you can notice from how they speak to each other. They chose to have their engagement photos taken at the Chickamauga National Battlefield, a national park in North Georgia near Chattanooga, TN. The park boasts lots of beautiful fields for roaming with their pup, Bartlett. We had a blast chasing the evening light.

Real Couples // In-Home Engagement: Trey + Kari

I giggle at my desk writing this and thinking about the first time I met Kari. My now-husband, Sean, and I had just moved into our first apartment together days before. I pulled in the gates and found a giant rent-by-the-hour Home Depot truck horribly parked across the equivalent of four parking spots. I was annoyed that I couldn't get to my parking spot. In fact, I think I went in and told Sean that whoever had rented it had clearly not grown up driving a truck and pulling a horse trailer around (me), but amidst my annoyance Kari come running out of her new apartment with another friend who was helping her move apologizing for her terrible parking job. I couldn't possibly stay irritated.

Real Couples // A Washington, DC Affair: Diana+Monroe

From a photographer's perspective, most weddings are fairly difficult, both mentally and physically, and we're usually completely exhausted at the end of the day. However, Diana and Monroe proved to us that weddings can be easy. Though their wedding day started early (8am) and we had a wedding the night before (something we never do), we happily and effortlessly cruised through their day while they smiled, laughed, and celebrated with a very intimate crowd of about 25. The shared exchanges of joy were endless, the weather was perfect, and their day ran like a well-oiled machine thanks to the team of Taylor and Hov.

Real Couples // A Central Park Ceremony: Valdora + Isabel

Valdora and Isabel put their love and their desires for the day first. Which meant an early morning intimate wedding ceremony under the Bethesda Terrace in Central Park with only their closest friends in attendance. Later in the afternoon they invited a larger group of friends and family to celebrate a small ceremony, dinner and dancing a few hours north of New York City. It reflected their goals to create a day that invited their loved ones to be a part of their love, all while sticking to their guns in regards to having a small and beautiful wedding where they felt comfortable sharing vows and tears and promises. Most important to them was that their ceremony reflected their feminist values. In keeping with this, they entered their ceremony space together: this was a visual reflection of supporting each other's decision to proactively commit to continuing their partnership founded on equality, communication, and personal growth. They left the order of reciting their vows up to chance.
