A Colorful and Chic Queer Wedding in West Chester, Pennsylvania: Sara + David
/David and I meet on Tinder a few years ago while we were both living in New York City. David was in acting school at the time and I was at school at SVA for graphic design. Since then we have been inseparable, and have loved seeing where our journey in life has taken us, through school, jobs, moving, etc. We now live in NYC with our cat, Sammi.
David's mother got married at the Concord Country Club a few years prior and after seeing how well the staff handled her wedding we couldn't imagine having ours anywhere else.
I actually wore two dresses, one during the ceremony and reception and one at the afterparty. Both were from Bridal Garden, a second hand bridal store in NYC. I chose to have fun with my something old (my dress), my something new (gold glittery Doc Martens), my something borrowed (my mom's necklace, which was passed down from my grandmother), and my something blue (my Vincent Van Gogh “Starry Night” socks). I also wore a DIY leather jacket. David wore a bespoke suit, customized with our wedding date in the jacket, as well as Marvel themed socks, cuff links, and a tie clip. All of the things we chose to wear on our wedding day represented some of our favorite things and interests. I also chose to tie my father’s wedding band to my bouquet.
We splurged on our planner and photographer. We knew Carolina Hatton would do an amazing job, and helped us articulate our dreams and make our wedding a reality. Carolina was able to put out any and all fires that came up. We also chose to splurge on our photographer, Judson Rappaport, because we wanted to make sure our day was captured perfectly by a true artist. Judson was so great the entire day and well worth the cost.
Our advice for couples planning their wedding would be don't follow traditions because you feel like you have to, but follow the ones you want to — the ones you truly value. Once we understood that the process of wedding planning became so much more enjoyable.
